Commentary

Commentary on 1 Corinthians 14:12

Theological / Devotional

Spiritual gifts. Literally, “spirits.” The different manifestations of spiritual power are represented here as many spirits.

Edifying. There is nothing wrong in desiring spiritual gifts; God wills that His people should thus be blessed, but the great objective of all the outpouring of the Spirit, namely the edification of the church, must be the goal of the desire for the gifts. There should be no selfish seeking for the gifts order to exalt self and satisfy personal ambition for power above one’s fellows.
