Commentary on 1 Kings 1:42

Theological / Devotional

Jonathan. This son of one of the conspirators had no doubt been left behind as a spy to ascertain what was going on in Jerusalem and the palace. He had previously risked his life in the carrying of confidential information (2 Sam. 15:27, 36 ; 17:17-21) — then, however, in the service of David.

Good tidings. The tidings were anything but good to the conspirators, and Adonijah could hardly have expected them to be such. He spoke as he did to reassure himself and his accomplices.
