Two and twenty years. This figure represents the official years of the king’s reign. The actual length of reign was only 21 years. In the method of reckoning used by the kings of Israel at this time, the remainder of the calendar year during which a king came to the throne was termed that king’s first year, whereas the earlier portion of that year had already been assigned to the preceding king as his last year (see on ch. 15:28).

In his stead. An item concerning the successor is the closing one in a regular formula henceforth used to close the account of each king (see on ch. 11:43).
