Theological / Devotional

His mother’s name was Maachah. The Jews, in common with Oriental usage, call any male ancestor, however remote, a father, and any female ancestor, a mother (see Gen. 3:20; 10:21; 17:4; 36:43; etc.). Maachah was the mother of Abijam (1 Kings 15:2), and therefore the grandmother of Asa. She is called “queen” (1 Kings 15:13), indicating that she held the honored position of queen mother at the court, and that great deference was still being paid to her.
