Commentary on 1 Kings 2:7

Theological / Devotional

Shew kindness. A pleasant contrast is David’s remembrance of Barzillai’s hospitality to him on the occasion of his flight from Absalom (2 Sam. 19:31-39). To eat at the king’s table meant to receive support from the royal treasury (2 Sam. 9:7; 1 Kings 18:19; Neh. 5:17). Barzillai had a son called Chimham (2 Sam. 19:37). Some have thought that Jeremiah’s reference to “the habitation of Chimham” (Jer. 41:17) as being by Bethlehem, indicates that David had given the son of Barzillai an inheritance there from property that was especially his own.
