Commentary on 1 Kings 22:24

Theological / Devotional

Smote Micaiah. The spirit of evil always reveals itself as evil. It is harsh, not kind; cruel, not merciful. God’s people are admonished, “Believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God” (1 John 4:1). “By their fruits ye shall know them” (Matt. 7:20). A listing of the works of the flesh and the fruits of the Spirit is found in Gal. 5:19-23, and by these the nature of the spirits may be tested. By smiting Micaiah on the cheek, Zedekiah gave proof that the spirit within him was evil.
