Commentary on 1 Samuel 13:17

Theological / Devotional

Three companies. Ophrah was probably located where two main roads met, northwest of Jericho. The land of Shual — literally, “the land of jackals” — probably designates the cavernous slopes of the district east of Ophrah as the mountains rapidly fall away from the crest of Mt. Ephraim toward the Jordan. This land is honeycombed with limestone caves — excellent places to hide.
