Commentary on 1 Samuel 14:47

Theological / Devotional

He vexed them. The emphasis in the last few verses of this chapter is placed on the material, rather than the spiritual, advancement of the kingdom. Saul seemed to exult in his military genius. Instead of protecting the rights of his people he took the offensive against his neighbor nations, with the purpose of enhancing his own reputation as king.

He imitated these nations, when he might have presented to the world a new and more perfect method of administration.
