David answered. The narrative records no direct reply of David acknowledging Saul’s invitation. Perhaps there was in Saul’s tone, rather than in his words, somewhat of a patronizing air that David was quick to discern, and that convinced him that the one now apparently so humble was still proud and obstinate. David had no assurance that Saul’s present frame of mind would long continue.
