Theological / Devotional

A great stone. In the field of Joshua, probably next to the highway. By the side of this stone the kine stopped. Beth-shemesh was a Levitical city, and her people had both the right and the duty to care for the ark. As there was no tabernacle, the Levites placed the sacred ark, together with the Philistines’ trespass offering, on top of the great stone, and offered the kine as a burnt offering to the Lord. Since Beth-shemesh is in the very heart of the Shephelah, or rolling hill country, where the highways ran through the heart of the valleys, this stone probably projected from the side of the hill and could easily be approached from above, yet on the lower side be some feet above the road.
