Commentary on 1 Timothy 3:11

Theological / Devotional

Wives. Gr. gunaikes, “women,” or “wives.” It is impossible to determine conclusively whether Paul is speaking of deaconesses or of deacons’ wives.

Grave. See on v. 8.

Slanderers. Gr. diaboloi, see on Matt. 4:1.

Sober. Gr. nephalioi, “abstainers from wine” (see on v. 2).

Faithful. That is, always trustworthy in matters committed to them. Perhaps this is a reference to trustworthiness in dispensing charity to the needy.
