Theological / DevotionalHundred thousand. Only a short time before, the army of Israel under Jehoahaz is said to have numbered 50 horsemen and 10,000 infantry (2 Kings 13:7). This number evidently constituted, not the number of men available for war in Israel, but the standing army left after the disastrous war with Syria. The fact that Amaziah was compelled to hire a force to swell the size of his army clearly indicates that 300,000 constituted approximately the available manpower of Judah at this time (v. 5).
