A carved image. According to 2 Kings 21:7 this was an Asherah, or grove (see on 2 Chron. 14:3). Judah had sunk so low that this female emblem of fertility was placed in the sacred Temple precincts. Josiah later “brought out the grove from the house of the Lord, without Jerusalem, unto the brook Kidron, and burned it” (2 Kings 23:6).
