Theological / Devotional

False apostles. Apparently they were, nominally, Christian Jews (v. 22) and claimed to be the apostles of Christ. Evidently, then, they had joined the Christian church (cf. Acts 15:1, 2, 5; Gal. 2:4, 5; Phil. 3:2, 3). But they were impostors, mere pretenders who had usurped the authority, rights, offices, and privileges of Christ’s true apostles. Lacking genuine credentials (see on 2 Cor. 3:3), they resorted to disguise and subterfuge.

Transforming. Greek metaschematizd, “to change the appearance of,” often stressing, as here, the appearance of change in contrast with a genuine transformation (see on Matt. 17:2).
