Theological / Devotional

A hard thing. Not hard for the Lord, but hard for Elijah to grant. It was not for a prophet to name his successor. Only God can choose those who will carry out the prophetic office. Elijah well knew that it was not within his province to nominate the one who was to carry on with the work to which he himself had been called by the Lord. For this reason it was impossible for him, apart from divine inspiration, to say whether or not the request would be granted.

When I am taken. The words, “when I am,” are not in the Hebrew and would be best omitted. The meaning is, “if you see me being taken.” If Elisha would be a witness of Elijah’s translation, then he would know that the Lord had seen fit to grant his request.
