Theological / Devotional

The soul of. These words are not in the Hebrew and are here inserted because the verb is feminine and David could not properly be the subject. The LXX has “the spirit of.” But if David grieved for Absalom, constantly longing for his return, why did he not bring him back? Though David loved his son, he obviously felt it necessary as a lesson both to Absalom and to the people that at least displeasure at Absalom’s deed be shown (cf. Patriarchs and Prophets 729).
