Theological / Devotional

Against thine handmaid. The parable here differs purposely from the actual facts so as not to create suspicion. In the case of David it was he who was alienated from Absalom and who refused to grant him permission to return. David believed that because of Absalom’s guilt in shedding his brother’s blood he could not grant him permission to return. In the parable it was the family, not the mother, who were insisting that the murderer be held guilty.

The heir also. There is probably a covert allusion here to Absalom as the heir to David’s throne.
