Why didst thou not smite him? Joab realized that if the leader of the conspiracy could be put out of the way, victory would be won and the rebellion be over. Joab had done much for Absalom, befriending him and securing his return to Jerusalem (ch. 14:1—24). But Absalom’s shameless betrayal of the trust placed in him turned Joab bitterly against him. Joab was determined to put him out of the way regardless of the orders of David.
