Thou shalt not die. With characteristic generosity David assured Shimei that his life would be spared. Shimei had been guilty of a serious crime and should have suffered punishment, but to have executed him would not have been in keeping with the spirit of the occasion. David chose to accept Shimei’s professed repentance at face value. However, Shimei’s insincerity must have become evident in due time, for David later charged Solomon concerning him: “His hoar head bring thou down to the grave with blood.” (1 Kings 2:8, 9; cf. 1 Kings 2:44).
