Requite you. David pledged that he would be the friend and protector of the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead even as Saul had been before him. Since the city was vulnerable to attack from the eastern desert, the time might come when the people would need the help of the new king. David wanted them to know that he held nothing against them because of their loyalty to Saul, and that they could count upon him even as they had counted on Saul.
