Commentary on 2 Timothy 3:17

Theological / Devotional

Man of God. See on 1 Tim. 6:11. Only those who sincerely choose to be known as God’s men will seriously allow the Scriptures to perform their fourfold function as set forth in 2 Tim. 3:16. By adhering to Biblical instruction they will be known by all as men of God.

Perfect. Gr. artios, “fitted,” “complete,” “equipped,” for all that is required of a man as a Christian.

Thoroughly furnished. Gr. exartizo, “completely fitted,” “adequately equipped.” The word “throughly” is Old English for “thoroughly.”

All good works. The best service a “man of God” can give is to communicate the blessings of the Bible, which have brought incomparable strength and hope into his own life.
