Acts 10:38

Anointed. Greek chrio, “to anoint,” the same word that appears in a different form as “Christ.” Coming shortly after Peter’s reference to Christ in Acts 10:36, this word seems to imply that it was at His baptism, when He received the Spirit, that Jesus of Nazareth became publicly and officially the Messiah, though He was “the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.”

Holy Ghost. Jesus was anointed at His baptism, not with oil, but with the Holy Spirit.

With power. When the Son of God humbled Himself at the incarnation, He laid aside the independent exercise of His attributes as the second person of the Godhead. For all that He accomplished on earth He relied, as must other men, on power from above.

Doing good. The life of Jesus exhibits a consistent example of dedication to the service of mankind.

Oppressed of the devil. In a sense all illness and suffering are from Satan. Even Paul’s “thorn in the flesh” was a “messenger of Satan to buffet” him. But there is also a specific demonic possession, not always recognized as such by modern medical diagnosis. This possession was manifested in all its terribleness and repulsiveness during the early years of the proclamation of the gospel. Jesus conquered this force whenever He met it. Again and again He cast out demons.

God was with him. Nicodemus confessed, “No man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.”
