Theological / Devotional

Judges. God’s first plan for Israel’s government in Canaan was rule by itinerant judges. Only when they refused did God give them a king “like all the nations” (1 Sam. 8:5-9).

Four hundred and fifty years. Textual evidence favors reading “He gave their land as an inheritance for about four hundred and fifty years. And afterwards He gave judges until Samuel the prophet.” For Hebrew chronology see Vol. I, p. 193.
