Theological / DevotionalDesired a king. Paul’s ancestors rejected God by desiring a king (1 Sam. 8:7). Paul would soon tell them (Acts 13:23-28) that their countrymen rejected Jesus as Messiah. The expectation of a kingly Messiah, looked for in vain, caused a sin similar to their forefathers’.
Saul. Paul was also a Saul of Benjamin (Phil. 3:5).
Forty years. Saul’s reign length is not given in the OT, but his youngest son Ishbosheth was 40 at Saul’s death (2 Sam. 2:10), and Saul was a “young man” when chosen king (1 Sam. 9:2). Josephus says Saul reigned 18 years before Samuel’s death and 22 after, agreeing with Paul’s account. See 1 Sam. 13:1.
