Acts 13:33

Fulfilled. Greek ekpleroo, “to fulfill completely,” “to make good” a promise.

Raised up Jesus again. Or “raised up Jesus.” These words may refer to Christ’s resurrection. But this raises a problem regarding the following quotation from Ps. 2 (“this day”). Many commentators understand “raised up Jesus” here as God’s introduction of Christ into the world, not the resurrection (Acts 3:22; 7:37). See Deut. 18:15.

Second psalm. The quotation is from Ps. 2:7. In ancient times, Psalms 1 and 2 were sometimes counted as one, so some manuscripts refer to this as the first psalm.

My Son. See Luke 1:35.

This day. This quotation from Ps. 2:7 has various interpretations. Some see it as referring directly to Jesus’ resurrection. Others see Ps. 2 as a victory song for an Israelite king, whose victory day marked his begetting or manifestation as God’s son. Paul applies it by inspiration to Christ as Israel’s King and God’s Son, and to His resurrection (cf. Deut. 18:15). Christian believers made the resurrection the foundation of Christ’s Sonship belief. Christ was “first begotten of the dead” (Rev. 1:5), and resurrection confirms His Sonship. See Luke 1:35.

Another interpretation understands “raised up Jesus” as referring to incarnation, with Ps. 2:7 referring to incarnation as in Heb. 1:5. Acts 13:34 then speaks specifically of resurrection.
