Served his own generation. Or “served in his own generation.” Suggests contrast between limited human service and Christ’s boundless service to all humanity.

By the will of God. These words may be the direct object of “served” or connected with the following verb. The word for “will” is boule, “counsel,” “purpose.” The passage may mean David served God’s purpose or fell asleep according to it when his work was done.

Fell on sleep. A scriptural euphemism for death (Acts 7:60; John 11:11-14; 1 Thess. 4:13, 14). Pagans thought death’s sleep eternal, as Greek and Roman epitaphs show.
