Perish. LXX rendering of Hab. 1:5, where Hebrew reads “be astounded.”
Work a work. Paul draws his argument close with stern application. Long wrongdoing results in unbelief and hardening hearts. Habakkuk’s “work” was raising the Chaldeans to execute God’s judgment (Hab. 1:6). Paul may have had in mind a similar judgment foretold by Christ, executed by Romans (Matt. 24:2-20), connected with Jewish rejection of Jesus. Like Stephen’s speech, the warning tone suggests anger and impatience among listeners.
