Commentary on Acts 13:47

Theological / Devotional

I have set thee. Quotation from Isa. 49:6, originally referring to Israel and prophetically to Christ (Isa. 41:8; 49:6). The apocryphal Book of Enoch (48:4) applied it to the Messiah as “light of the Gentiles.” Simeon applied it to Jesus as “a light to lighten the Gentiles” (Luke 2:32). Paul and Barnabas apply this prophecy to the Christian church and themselves, entrusted with bringing salvation’s good news to the world, a responsibility Jews failed to fulfill.
