Commentary on Acts 13:5

Theological / Devotional

Salamis. At Cyprus’s eastern end, the nearest port from Seleucia.

Preached. They proclaimed forthrightly from the Scriptures the word of God, presenting a crucified and risen Savior (v. 12).

Synagogues. The plural implies a considerable Jewish population. Following their rule of preaching first to Jews (v. 46), the apostles made initial contacts in synagogues, which provided valuable opportunities for visitors to preach.

John. John Mark, Barnabas’s cousin (Col. 4:10).

Minister. The Greek huperetes means “under rower” on a ship, extended to “assistant.” In the NT it is used for officers executing sentences (Matt. 5:25), synagogue chazzan (Vol. V, p. 56), and officers under Jewish leaders (John 7:32). Luke uses it twice for gospel ministers (Luke 1:2; Acts 26:16). Mark’s specific duties are unstated but evidently he assisted the apostles generally.
