Commentary on Acts 13:50

Theological / Devotional

Devout and honourable women. Probably Gentile women of rank interested in Judaism. Jews sought to influence Antioch’s leading men through them. Many such women longed for a higher, purer life than Greek and Roman debasement and appreciated Israel’s ethics and faith. Many became proselytes.

Chief men. Through pagan magistrates, Jews in Antioch sought action against Paul and Barnabas, as Jews in Jerusalem had done against Jesus.

Raised persecution. Barnabas and Paul were not the only sufferers. Early Antioch Christians learned the kingdom of God comes only through “much tribulation” (Acts 14:22). Paul recalled these sufferings repeatedly, including in his last writings (2 Tim. 3:11).

Coasts. Meaning “boundaries” or “regions,” not just seacoast.
