Theological / Devotional

Called Paul. For the first time the name Paul is introduced, by which the apostle to the Gentiles is best known. See Additional Notes on Acts 7, Note 2.

Filled with the Holy Ghost. The Greek participle tense implies a sudden spiritual power manifesting insight, righteous indignation, and foreknowledge of divine chastisement. Paul knew by the Spirit that his sentence on Elymas would come to pass.

Set his eyes. Greek atenizo, “to gaze intently.” Some suggest Paul’s vision was defective from the Damascus road experience, but Luke uses atenizo for normal fixed gazes (Acts 3:4; Luke 4:20 ; 22:56). Paul observed Elymas closely, ready to discredit the apostles, and delivered a bitter condemnation.
