They feared. With good reason, for wrongful punishment of a Roman citizen could have caused the magistrates’ removal, degradation, and inability to hold other positions of responsibility. This explains their oversolicitous efforts to find a quiet solution to their predicament. A plea of ignorance of the victims’ citizenship would not be sufficient defense for their illegal actions. They could only hope to persuade Paul and Silas to accept a discreet settlement for the injustice done them. Little did they know the unselfish character of the men they had so violently mistreated.
