After these things, Paul purposed in the Spirit to go through Macedonia and Achaia to Jerusalem. The expression may mean Paul's own spirit or inspiration by the Holy Spirit. Communication with churches in Macedonia and Achaia had revealed serious disorders needing Paul's attention, including fornication, schisms, and incestuous adultery. He also wished to bring contributions from Gentile churches to needy Jewish believers in Palestine. Paul had spoken of "beasts at Ephesus" and a "great door and effectual" opened to him. Despite serious troubles, he planned to visit Greece and then Jerusalem, expressing for the first time his desire to go to Rome, strengthened by friends there. He planned also to go to Spain.
