Demetrius reminded them they saw and heard the falling off in demand for products related to Artemis worship as Christianity spread. His speech confirmed the success of Paul's labors throughout Asia Minor. Paul's presence or writings likely reached nearby cities. Pliny later described temples almost deserted and few purchasers for sacrifices. Demetrius scornfully referred to "this Paul," whose bodily presence was unimpressive. Many people were turned away from Artemis devotion and shrine purchases. Demetrius virtually admitted the idol was a god, contrary to pagan philosophers who said images were symbolic.
