Paul asked, "Into what then were ye baptized?" The New Testament phrase "baptize in" or "into" expresses the close union with God brought by immersion. The men's answers showed incomplete instruction and spiritual experience, corresponding with their lack of knowledge. They were likely unaware of their own lack and probably considered themselves fully qualified to belong to the congregation. They answered, "Into John's baptism." This baptism may have been by Apollos before his fuller instruction or by someone like him. Except for verse 4, this is the last New Testament reference to John the Baptist.
