The town clerk, a highly influential city official and custodian of records, sought to soothe the crowd with respect for their religion. He called Ephesus a worshipper (neokoros) of the great goddess Diana (Artemis). The image was said to have fallen from Jupiter (Zeus), possibly a meteoric stone worshiped in its original form or used in early sculpture. The clerk's speech was cautious and official, not fanatical.
