Theological / Devotional

Took him. Or, “arrested him,” “took him into custody.” The idea was not to rescue Paul, but to learn what the trouble was, and to prevent a chief actor in it from being killed before the affair could be properly investigated. But for Paul it was a rescue, as at Corinth (ch. 18:14-17).

Bound. In keeping with Roman practice, a chain was doubtless fastened to each of his arms, with the two ends of the chain held by soldiers guarding Paul (see ch. 12:4, 6).

Thus held, Paul was brought before the tribune Lysias (cf. chs. 23:26; 24:7, 22) for a preliminary examination.

Demanded. Rather, “began to inquire,” “began to investigate judicially.”
