Some cried. Or, “some were crying.” Such a confusion of accounts and accusations was to be expected from an agitated mob, as had previously happened at Ephesus (ch. 19:32).

Castle. Gr. parembole, “that which is cast up,” that is, an encampment (Heb. 13:11, 13; Rev. 20:9) or “the army encamped” (see Heb. 11:34). The transition from these meanings, as military field terms, to the meaning here of “a fortified tower” is similar to the transition from the Latin castra, “camps,” to castellum, “a fortified place,” “castle.” Paul, though a prisoner, was at least safe in the shelter of the tower. The rescue occurred just in time.
