Art thou? The emphasis in the officer’s question, as stated in Greek, is upon the pronoun “thou”: “art thou a Roman?” Obviously the officer was surprised at the thought that a man who had just raised a Jewish mob to a pitch of frenzy by a speech in Aramaic should be a Roman citizen.
