Theological / Devotional

All gave heed. See on verse 6. His deceptions met with great success, for every class of people believed in him. The sorcerer appears as one of the earliest of those who come with lying signs and wonders so as to deceive, if it were possible, the very elect (cf. Matt. 24:24; 2 Thess. 2:9).

Great power of God. Textual evidence favors the reading “the power of God that is called Great.” Irenaeus (Against Heresies i. 23) says of Simon Magus that “he was glorified by many as if he were a god. ... He represented himself, in a word, as being the loftiest of all powers.”
