King of the north. Following the parenthetical remarks of verse 14, this verse continues the narrative begun in verse 13 concerning Antiochus’ second campaign in Palestine.
Mount. Heb. solelah, “a mound,” that is, “siegeworks.”
The most fenced cities. Heb. ‘ir mibsaroth, literally, “a city of fortifications.” The reference is possibly to Gaza, which fell to Antiochus III in 201 B.C., after a considerable siege. Some commentators understand this passage to refer to Sidon, where Antiochus cornered an Egyptian army in this same war, and after a siege forced the Egyptians to surrender.
Arms. A symbol of strength (see verses 22, 31).
