Theological / Devotional

It shall not be. According to the interpretation that the career of Constantine is here delineated, the following is suggested: In spite of all Constantine’s attempts to revive the former glory and power of the Roman Empire, his efforts at best met with only partial success.

The former. The passage may be translated, “it shall not be as the former [time], so the latter.” Some believe the reference here is to the removal of the seat of the empire to Constantinople. This removal has been designated the signal of the downfall of the empire.
