Commentary on Daniel 2:27
Theological / DevotionalCannot the wise men. Daniel had no desire to exalt himself above the wise men. He aimed, rather, to impress upon the king the futility of trusting his wise men for counsel and help. He hoped to turn the king’s eyes to the great God in heaven, the God whom Daniel worshiped, the God of the Hebrews, whose people had been conquered by the king.
The astrologers, the magicians. See on ch. 1:20.
Soothsayers. Aramaic gazerin, from a root meaning “to cut,” “to determine.” Hence the generally accepted meaning is “the deciders,” or “the determiners [of destiny].” From the position of the stars, by various arts of computation and divining, these soothsayers thought they could determine the future (see on eh. 1:20).
