Theological / Devotional

Fire. A symbol of great calamities (see Eze. 30:8) or a flaring up of anger (see Jer. 15:14; 17:4). “Hell” is a figure of destruction (see Prov. 15:11; Ps. 86:13).

The lowest hell. Literally, “the depths of Sheol” (RSV), that is, of the “grave.” A figurative expression denoting total extinction.
