To give thanks. Similar statements of thanksgiving are found in Rom. 1:8; 1 Cor. 1:4; Phil. 1:3; Col. 1:3; 1 Thess. 1:2; 2 Thess. 1:3; 2 Tim. 1:3; Philemon 4, 5. Paul’s spirit of gratitude was “without ceasing,” and found expression on many occasions. The frequency of Paul’s outbursts of thanksgiving is an indication of the joyous and radiant nature of his spirit, without which he could never have endured his various sufferings.

The note of joy and thanksgiving is sadly lacking in many Christian lives; the remedy is partly to be found in the sharing of happy experiences in the religious life.

Making mention. A study of the prayers of Paul reveals that his petitions were largely for his churches and for individuals (see Rom. 1:9; Phil. 1:4).
