Theological / Devotional

A great mystery. Rather, “this mystery is great.” For a comment on “mystery” see on Rom. 11:25. The word suggests, in NT usage, something that has been hidden, particularly a spiritual truth, but is now revealed. Paul is saying that the revealed mystery of the union of husband and wife is indeed a great and profound truth, but that he is applying it to the union of Christ and His church. While human marriage can be understood, the mystic union of Christ and believer, though a revealed truth, is still beyond our complete apprehension; we still “see through a glass, darkly” (1 Cor. 13:12).
