Commentary on Esther 5:9

Theological / Devotional

Stood not up, nor moved. Or, “neither rose nor trembled” (RSV). Condemned to death by Hainan’s decree, Mordecai boldly defied the perpetrator of the crime. His presence in the king’s gate is evidence that he no longer wore sackcloth (ch. 4:2) as he had two days before. Without doubt he knew of Esther’s favorable acceptance by the king, and believed that her plan would be crowned with success.
