Theological / Devotional

Gods of silver. This repetition of the prohibition of the second commandment is to be accounted for by the rampant idolatry of the time. How strong this idolatrous pressure was is shown by the fact that when the people thought Moses had deserted them they forthwith made themselves a golden calf (ch. 32). But “God is a Spirit” (John 4:24). That they might not worship Him through material representations, He remained invisible as He spoke from the cloud on Mt. Sinai (Deut. 4:12).
