Theological / Devotional

Unleavened bread. This was ceremonially purer than leavened bread, since fermentation is a type of sin and corruption (Ex. 12:15; Matt. 16:6, 12; 1 Cor. 5:6-8).

Tempered with oil. Literally, “mixed with oil.” Oil was one ingredient of the cakes, in contrast with the wafers, over which oil was poured.
