Theological / Devotional

An eminent place. Hebrew gab, explained by some commentators as something arched or rounded, hence, perhaps, a vault. However, reliefs from Asshur seem to indicate that a certain raised platform in front of an altar is meant, on which ritual sexual intercourse was carried on. The LXX reads oikema pomikon, “brothel house.” In many ancient forms of worship prostitution assumed a quasi-religious character.
